Ethan

She’s beautiful and she knows it. She holds her shoulders back and her chin up, proud as hell and not willing to let the world grind her down no matter how determined it is to do just that.

She’s everything I should dislike, but I can’t bring myself to. And Benji is going to need to forgive me for kissing her, because I just couldn’t help it. If he’d been in my shoes, he would have done the same. It’s part of what I love about him.

I’d do it again in a heartbeat, and part of me hopes that heartbeat is gonna come soon. I don’t kiss her again that afternoon though, instead I help her make sandwiches in a kitchen that’s the size of my house, and we sit out on a back patio and look over the manicured lawn that makes up her garden. It’s nice. It’s almost normal, if sitting in a place that probably costs more than most people will earn in their lifetimes. In five lifetimes.

And she acts like she doesn’t even see it. It’s not that she’s spoiled (even though I can tell her father’s trying), it’s because she doesn’t see the value in it. Because to her it doesn’t mean anything. Everything, every expensive piece of art hanging on the walls, to what looks like imported stone from Italy making up the entrance hall floor, is a shackle around her wrist. This house is tying her down and keeping her rooted in a place that brings her nothing but pain.

I know all about Haisley Foster from how the media tells it. Her mom’s a pretty actress better known for her scandalous affair with a barely-eighteen boy, bailing on her successful director-husband and her fifteen year-old daughter. Her father’s list of credits are as long as my arm, his nominations and record-breaking work just half that, which is more than most people could brag about.

But that’s her family. Not her. And she isn’t what I expected in person. She disappeared from social media shortly after that stupid video that went viral, and hell no, I never watched it, censored or otherwise. I don’t need to see trash to know what it looks like.

She’s quieter in real life, more rounded down, like her edges have been filed off in the fight to make her own place in a world that is always telling her what she is. Sure, she’s putting up a fight, but all her danger signs are flashing. If she were a car, the dashboard would be lit up with alarms.

She’s wearing away right in front of me. How has her father not seen it? My mother would take one look at her, curse under her breath, and drag Haze into the house for a good meal and a chat. She’d end the day with a crocheted blanket over her lap, a cat purring away at her feet, and a cup of hot chocolate steaming on the coffee table in front of her.

I’m half tempted to kidnap her, I’ll admit that much.
